Advanced Diagnostics & Imaging
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. Our facility is equipped with a comprehensive suite of cutting-edge diagnostic imaging and laboratory tools, enabling our specialists to precisely identify the cause of medical and lameness issues.
Digital Radiography (DR)
Utilizes high-resolution digital sensors instead of traditional film, providing immediate, clear x-ray images. Essential for evaluating bone structures for fractures, arthritis, developmental orthopedic disease (OCD), laminitis, infections (osteomyelitis), dental disease, and sinus problems. Can also help identify some soft tissue issues such as foreign bodies.
Ultrasonography
Employs sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues and fluid. Non-invasive and extremely versatile. This is the gold standard for evaluating tendons and ligaments for injury diagnosis or to monitor healing. Also crucial for assessing joints (effusion, synovial thickening, limited cartilage views), abdomen (colic workups, organ visualization, tumor detection), thorax (pleural fluid, lung surface, heart), reproductive structures (mares and stallions), eyes, and identifying/characterizing masses or fluid pockets.
Standing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Utilizes powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to generate highly detailed images, particularly of soft tissues. Performed standing under sedation, offering a valuable option for specific cases, particularly distal limb imaging. This is your next step in diagnosing complex lameness originating in the hoof (navicular structures, deep digital flexor tendon, collateral ligaments, etc.) and other intricate soft tissue injuries in joints or tendon sheaths.
Video Endoscopy & Gastroscopy
We use flexible or rigid scopes with integrated cameras to directly visualize internal body cavities and passages.
- Upper Airway Endoscopy: Evaluating the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx (for function – roaring, DDSP), and guttural pouches. Dynamic Endoscopy allows assessment during exercise on a track or treadmill to diagnose performance-limiting conditions not apparent at rest.
- Gastroscopy: Essential for diagnosing Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) in the stomach and proximal duodenum.
- Other Uses: Cystoscopy (bladder evaluation), Hysteroscopy (uterine evaluation), Thoracoscopy/Laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgical evaluation of chest/abdomen).
Comprehensive Laboratory Services
Fully equipped in-house and reference laboratory support for analyzing blood, urine, feces, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), synovial fluid, respiratory secretions (BAL / TTW), tissue biopsies, and more.
- Critical for internal medicine cases (organ function, infection, anemia, inflammation markers), endocrinology testing (PPID, EMS), infectious disease diagnostics (serology, PCR, culture), parasitology, cytology (cell analysis), and histopathology (tissue architecture analysis).
Lameness Evaluation & Sports Medicine
Dedicated to keeping equine athletes and companions sound, comfortable, and performing at their best, this service integrates expert clinical examination with advanced diagnostics and therapies.
- Lameness
- Performance Evaluation
- Diagnostic Imaging
- Joint & Soft Tissue
- Medicine & Orthobiologics
- Farrier Collaboration
- Rehabilitation
Comprehensive Lameness Examinations
Thorough evaluations including flexion tests, nerve or joint blocks, and gait analysis on various surfaces.
Poor Performance Evaluation
Focused on optimizing the health and performance of athletic horses and investigating subtle issues causing decreased performance.
Advanced Diagnostic Imaging
Utilizing DR, ultrasound, and MRI for pinpoint diagnosis. Imaging guides treatment planning and prognosis.
Therapeutic Joint & Soft Tissue Injections
Administration of medications directly into affected structures to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Ultrasound-Guided Injections: Essential for precise needle placement into difficult-to-access structures like cervical (neck) facets, sacroiliac (SI) joints, deep bursae, or specific tendon or ligament lesions.
Regenerative Medicine & Orthobiologics
Advanced therapies aimed at promoting tissue healing and modulating the inflammatory process, often used for tendon or ligament injuries and osteoarthritis.
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Concentrates platelets and growth factors from the horse’s own blood.
- Stem Cell Therapy: Utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (often harvested from bone marrow or adipose tissue) for their regenerative potential.
- Autologous Conditioned Serum (ACS / IRAP): Processes blood to concentrate anti-inflammatory cytokines, particularly the Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein.
- Autologous Protein Solution (APS / Pro-Stride): Another blood-derived product concentrating anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors.
Farrier Collaboration
We recognize the critical role of hoof care in soundness and performance. Our team can help develop corrective shoeing plans based on clinical findings and diagnostic imaging (e.g. radiographs for hoof balance, sole depth).
- Management of complex hoof conditions like laminitis, navicular syndrome, hoof wall cracks, white line disease, and angular or flexural deformities in conjunction with attending farriers.
Equine Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation is essential for optimizing recovery from injury or surgery, managing chronic conditions, and enhancing athletic potential. Our rehabilitation services utilize targeted modalities under veterinary supervision to help improve circulation, build muscle strength safely, enhance healing, restore range of motion, and promote overall soundness and well-being.
- Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT): This non-invasive treatment uses focused high-energy sound waves directed at injured or inflamed tissues. ESWT stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, reduces pain, and promotes tissue regeneration. It’s commonly used for tendon and ligament injuries, back pain, arthritis management, navicular syndrome, and stimulating bone healing.
- Underwater Treadmill Therapy: Provides controlled exercise within a specialized tank of temperature-controlled water. The buoyancy of the water significantly reduces concussive forces on joints and limbs, allowing for earlier and safer exercise post-injury or surgery. The water resistance helps build muscle strength, improve cardiovascular fitness, and enhance gait quality, making it ideal for conditioning and rehabilitating a wide range of musculoskeletal issues.
- EquiVibe Vibration Plate Therapy: This therapy involves the horse standing on a platform that generates whole-body vibrations at specific frequencies. Vibration therapy aims to improve circulation, potentially increase bone density, relax muscles, and reduce soreness. It can be used as part of warm-up/cool-down protocols, for recovery sessions, and to support horses with chronic conditions.
Surgery
The following outlines many procedures routinely performed by our dedicated surgical team. However, the field of equine surgery is broad and ever-evolving, so this isn’t an exhaustive list. Understanding that each horse’s situation is unique, we invite you to contact us directly to schedule a consultation. Our veterinarians can thoroughly discuss your horse’s individual needs, answer questions about specific surgeries, and help you navigate the best course of treatment.

Emergency Procedures
Recognizing that critical situations demand immediate action, our surgical team and hospital are prepared 24/7 to perform life-saving emergency surgeries. Rapid response and intervention are crucial in these cases. Common emergency procedures include:
Colic Surgery (Exploratory Laparotomy)
As our most frequent emergency surgery, our team possesses extensive experience and well-honed expertise in performing exploratory laparotomies for colic. This procedure involves a midline abdominal incision, enabling direct visualization allowing us to diagnose the specific cause of colic, such as intestinal torsions, displacements, strangulations, or severe impactions, and surgically correct the problem whenever possible.
Cesarean Section (C-Section)
This emergency procedure involves surgically delivering a foal through incisions in the mare’s abdomen and uterus. It’s performed when vaginal delivery isn’t possible due to dystocia (difficult birth), malpositioning of the foal, or other complications that threaten the life of the mare or foal. Our goal is rapid and safe delivery.
Severe Laceration Repair & Wound Management
While many wounds can be managed non-surgically or with routine closure, extensive, deep, or heavily contaminated lacerations often require emergency surgical intervention under general anesthesia.
- This involves thorough exploration to assess damage to deeper structures, meticulous cleaning and debridement (removal of dead or foreign material), and layered surgical repair.
- Urgent surgery is especially critical for wounds involving joints, tendon sheaths, or major blood vessels.
Septic Synovial Structure Lavage (Joints / Tendon Sheaths)
Acute infections within joints (septic arthritis) or tendon sheaths (septic tenosynovitis), often resulting from wounds or injections, require aggressive and immediate treatment to prevent catastrophic damage and chronic lameness.
- Emergency surgery is performed to flush the infected structure with large volumes of sterile fluid, remove debris, and administer local antibiotics.
Bladder Rupture Repair
Surgical repair of tears in the urinary bladder wall. While often an emergency condition, particularly common in newborn foals shortly after birth, the procedure itself involves abdominal surgery to access and suture the bladder defect.
Orthopedic & Musculoskeletal Surgery
These interventions focus on conditions affecting bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments, aiming to restore soundness, function, and comfort for your horse.
Arthroscopy
A cornerstone of equine orthopedics, using small cameras and instruments inserted through keyhole incisions. This offers our surgeons direct visualization of joint surfaces (cartilage), ligaments, menisci, and synovial lining to accurately diagnose conditions.
- Therapeutic Use:
- Removal of bone chips (e.g. carpus, fetlock, hock).
- Removal of Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) fragments in various joints (stifle, hock, fetlock, shoulder).
- Debridement and lavage for septic joints or tendon sheaths.
- Treatment of meniscal tears or ligament injuries within joints (e.g. stifle).
- Synovectomy (removal of inflamed joint lining).
- Treatment of subchondral bone cysts.

- Angular Limb Deformity (ALD) Correction: Procedures in foals to correct deviations like knock-knees (valgus) or bow-legs (varus):
- Periosteal Stripping: Incising the periosteum (bone lining) to stimulate growth on the slower-growing side.
- Transphyseal Bridging (Screw & Wire): Slowing growth on the faster-growing side using implants like screws and wires or small plates across the growth plate (physis).
- Subchondral Bone Cyst Treatment: Arthroscopic debridement, , or placement of screws to encourage healing.
Arthrodesis (Joint Fusion)
A surgical procedure to fuse the bones of a joint, eliminating motion and thereby relieving pain associated with severe, untreatable arthritis in low-motion joints.
- Commonly performed in the lower hock joints (distal intertarsal, tarsometatarsal) and the pastern joint (proximal interphalangeal). Typically involves cartilage removal and stabilization with plates and screws.

- Corneal Laceration Repair: Microsurgical suturing of wounds to the cornea.
Internal Medicine
Our internal medicine services focus on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of complex diseases affecting multiple body systems in adult horses and foals. We utilize advanced diagnostic tools and develop comprehensive management plans for a wide range of conditions.

Preventative Care & Wellness
Proactive healthcare is key to ensuring your horse lives a long, healthy, and comfortable life. Our comprehensive preventative care program focuses on identifying potential issues early, protecting against disease, and providing the foundational support needed for optimal well-being. We partner with you to create a tailored wellness plan for each horse.
Annual Wellness Examinations
This thorough check-up forms the cornerstone of your horse’s healthcare. It includes a complete physical assessment evaluating vital signs, listening to the heart, lungs, and gut sounds, checking eyes, and assessing body condition. These exams allow for early detection of potential problems and provide an opportunity to discuss your horse’s lifestyle, diet, and any concerns you may have.
Personalized Vaccination Programs
Vaccinations are critical for protecting your horse from potentially life-threatening infectious diseases. We develop individualized vaccination schedules based on your horse’s specific risk factors, including age, use, travel habits, and exposure to other horses, while following American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) guidelines. This includes core vaccines recommended for all horses in our region.
Targeted Deworming Strategies
We advocate for modern, evidence-based parasite control to effectively manage internal parasites while combating dewormer resistance. Our approach utilizes Fecal Egg Count testing to determine the specific parasite burden in your horse. Based on these results, we recommend targeted deworming treatments only when necessary, using the most appropriate product, rather than relying on rotational schedules.
Equine Dentistry
Regular dental care is vital for comfortable chewing, efficient digestion, optimal performance, and overall health. Our dental examinations involve a thorough visual inspection and palpation of the mouth, often using a full-mouth speculum and bright light. Routine care typically includes floating, which is the process of rasping sharp enamel points on the teeth that can cause pain and ulceration. We also address minor malocclusions and can arrange for more advanced procedures if required.
Coggins Testing & Health Certificates:
- A negative Coggins test is required for interstate travel and entry into most equine events, as it screens for the infectious viral disease Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).
- Health Certificates, also called Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs), are official documents required for crossing state lines or international borders. These certificates confirm your horse has been recently examined and appears healthy and free from signs of contagious disease.
- Please plan ahead as these often require specific timing before travel.
- Current page on website: https://southvalleyequine.com/services/coggins-health
Microchipping
A reliable and permanent way to identify your horse. A tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under the skin through a simple injection. This unique identifier is invaluable for proving ownership and significantly increases the chances of recovering your horse if they’re ever lost, stolen, or missing following an emergency.

Convenient access to prescribed medications.

Reproduction
Our reproductive services provide comprehensive care for breeding mares and stallions, utilizing modern techniques and an experienced team to maximize breeding success and manage reproductive health. We offer a range of services from basic breeding management to advanced reproductive technologies.
Stallion Reproductive Services
- Breeding Soundness Examinations: A comprehensive assessment of a stallion’s fertility includes a physical examination, evaluation of the reproductive organs, semen collection, and a detailed laboratory analysis of the ejaculate assessing sperm motility, concentration, volume, and morphology.
- Semen Collection & Evaluation: Semen is typically collected using an artificial vagina while the stallion mounts a phantom or suitable mare. The collected sample undergoes immediate evaluation in our laboratory to determine its quality and suitability for breeding purposes.
- Semen Processing for Cooled Shipment or Freezing: We prepare semen doses for immediate use or for shipping cooled. This involves adding specialized extenders to prolong sperm viability. We also offer semen cryopreservation services, freezing semen in straws for long-term storage or international distribution, following strict quality control protocols.
Mare Reproductive Services
- Breeding Soundness Examinations: We perform thorough evaluations to assess a mare’s potential fertility before breeding. This typically includes reviewing her history, a physical examination, rectal palpation, and detailed ultrasound examination of the ovaries, uterus, and cervix. Additional diagnostics like uterine culture, cytology, or biopsy may be recommended.
- Cycle Management: We utilize transrectal ultrasound to monitor follicular development and determine the optimal time for breeding. Hormonal therapies can be employed to synchronize cycles or induce ovulation reliably, facilitating successful coordination with stallion availability or semen shipment schedules.
- Artificial Insemination (AI): Our team is experienced in performing artificial insemination using fresh semen collected on-site, cooled semen shipped from stallions located elsewhere, or frozen semen which requires precise timing and handling for optimal conception rates.
- Embryo Transfer (ET): This technique allows valuable mares to produce multiple foals in a season or continue their performance careers. The process involves inseminating the donor mare, flushing the resulting embryo from her uterus about seven days post-ovulation, and then non-surgically transferring the embryo into a synchronized recipient mare who carries the pregnancy to term.
- Key Feature: Recipient Mare Leasing Program: As part of our comprehensive Embryo Transfer services, we offer clients the option to lease mares from our carefully selected and managed recipient herd. These mares are prepared specifically to receive embryos, helping to optimize the chances of a successful pregnancy.
- Pregnancy Monitoring: Early pregnancy detection is reliably performed using ultrasound, typically around 14-16 days post-ovulation. We also use ultrasound to monitor fetal viability throughout gestation, identify twins early for appropriate management, and assess placental health in later stages.
- High-Risk Pregnancy Management: We provide specialized monitoring and care for mares with a history of reproductive problems or those that develop complications during pregnancy, such as placentitis. This involves careful monitoring and potential medical interventions to support the mare and fetus through to term.
Foaling Assistance & Management Services
Bringing a new foal into the world is an exciting event, and providing a safe, controlled environment with experienced oversight significantly increases the chances of a positive outcome for both the mare and foal. Our foaling service offers peace of mind during this critical period.
Our goal is to facilitate a smooth, safe delivery for your mare and ensure the healthiest possible start for your newborn foal—providing expert care and support throughout the entire process.
- Dedicated Foaling Environment: We provide clean, spacious, dedicated foaling stalls designed for safety and comfort. These stalls are closely monitored, often utilizing video surveillance systems, allowing for constant observation without unnecessary disturbance to the mare.
- Pre-Foaling Monitoring: As the mare approaches her due date, she receives close observation from our experienced team. We may utilize predictive tools alongside careful monitoring of physical signs to anticipate the onset of labor.
- 24/7 Attended Foaling: During the expected foaling window, mares enrolled in our service receive round-the-clock supervision. Trained personnel are present to observe the stages of labor and provide gentle assistance during a normal delivery if needed, such as clearing fetal membranes or ensuring the foal takes its first breaths.
- Prompt Intervention: Our experienced team is skilled at recognizing the subtle signs of dystocia or a difficult birth. Should complications arise, we’re prepared to intervene quickly and appropriately, providing necessary obstetric assistance or rapidly escalating care if emergency procedures are required.
- Immediate Post-Partum Care: Following delivery, we provide immediate care for both mare and foal. The mare is monitored for normal placental passage and any signs of complications or trauma. The newborn foal receives essential initial care, including ensuring adequate breathing, umbilical cord treatment to prevent infection, monitoring body temperature, and assessing vigor and the vital suckle reflex to ensure timely intake of colostrum.
